Laser Toning: How Many Sessions Do You Really Need? An Honest Doctor Explains.

ย

Laser Toning: How Many Sessions Do You Really Need? Hello! I'm the director of Tatoa Clinic. This post is all about laser toning. I'll get straight to the conclusion, because I know that's what you're here for.

ย Laser Toning

I focus on the "So, what's the conclusion?" part of things, so I'll give it to you upfront.Toning must be done continuously.

You need to think in terms of **at least 10 sessions**, and depending on your self-care, you might not feel much of a change. If you stop managing it, it will revert back quickly.

Sounds a bit irresponsible, right? Haha, I know....

By far, the most common question I get during consultations is, **"How many toning sessions do I need?"**

I say the same thing in the exam room, but the easiest analogy is this:

"It's like taking PT (Personal Training) classes at a gym."

Not only do you have to attend the sessions consistently, but you also have to be strict with your own self-management. In that sense, the principle is the same.

To get in good shape, do you need 5 PT sessions, or 10?

Why Is Continuous Treatment Necessary? ๐Ÿค”

At this point, an explanation of *why* it needs to be continuous seems necessary. Especially since laser toning at a clinic isn't cheap!

What we commonly call "blemishes" (this isn't a medical term) are composed of melanin cells. Depending on criteria like whether these melanin cells are on the skin's surface or deeper, or where they tend to appear on the face, they get different names: melasma, freckles, lentigo, seborrheic keratosis, ABNOM, Ota's nevus, etc.

The different skin colors of Black, White, and Asian people are also just a result of how much melanin is present. These pigments don't just get created once and stay that way forever. **They react to stimuli, grow, and increase in both number and size.**

The purpose of laser toning is to break up these melanin cells. If 5 sessions of toning could make all pigment lesions disappear, then with about 10 sessions, a Black person could become Asian, and an Asian could become White, right? That's nonsense.

If any clinic tells you, "10 sessions of toning will definitely clear up your pigmentation!"... that's a scam. In no case is it possible to guarantee improvement based on the number of toning sessions. Toning is a long, long fight. It might just be the one treatment where it's hardest to feel the progress.

How to Get Bright, "Jade-like" Skin ๐Ÿ“Š

So, what do you need to do to improve your skin tone and get that "jade-like" skin? There are three main things:

๐Ÿ’ก The 3 Pillars of Brightening Care
1. Minimize Irritation
2. Moisturize
3. Sun Protection

ย

1. Minimize Irritation (Stop the Gua Sha!) ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ’ผ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ’ป

**Absolutely do not rub your face.**

Gua Sha!! Especially Gua Sha!! **Please, just stop using Gua Sha...** I'm begging you ใ… ใ… . You'll get "natural shadow" lines along the Gua Sha path. And they don't go away. (And your face... it doesn't get smaller....)

Many people get pigmentation at the corners of their mouth. If you repeatedly wipe the corners of your mouth with your thumb and index finger, you'll get pigmentation there. If you tie your hair back in a tight "all-back" style, you'll get pigmentation along your hairline. In short, **the more friction the skin experiences, the darker that area becomes.**

โš ๏ธ Friction is the Enemy!
Your face is extremely sensitive to friction. At our clinic, we are so serious about this that we even instruct patients to wash their face with foam *only*, without rubbing their skin at all.

2. Moisturize (The Absolute Basic) ๐Ÿ“š

Skin, lotion, moisturizing cream, lip balm, body lotion... there are so many products for hydration. Moisturizing is the basic of basics for skincare. Honestly, it's so important it's almost not even worth explaining.

To put it bluntly: **coming to a dermatologist for skin treatments without moisturizing is the same as throwing your money in the street.**

ย

3. Sun Protection: Sunscreen ๐Ÿงฎ

Even I, a doctor, have only just recently managed to start using this diligently... Yes, **sunscreen**. I know better than anyone how important it is, but I still think the barrier to entry is extremely high.

It's sticky, greasy... stings if it gets in your eyes. It's incredibly annoying, but still. You have to do it.

However, I recommend going to a store (like Olive Young or Sephora), testing them on your hand, and finding a product whose texture you can tolerate before buying.

(No matter how much I tell patients, the ones who don't want to do it, just won't... I understand ใ… )

Summary: The Core Rules ๐Ÿ“

Here is the final summary of what you MUST do.

Key Takeaways for Toning Success

  • No Gua Sha! Minimize all friction.
  • Moisturize sufficiently.
  • Sunscreen diligently.

The Honest Truth About Toning

โœจ Core 1: It's a Marathon: Minimum 10 sessions to start. This is a long-term commitment.
๐Ÿ“Š Core 2: Self-Care is 80%: Moisturize & Use Sunscreen (Goal: 50g tube/month).
๐Ÿงฎ Core 3: The Enemy:
Friction = Pigmentation (STOP the Gua Sha!)
๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ’ป Core 4: It's Like PT: It's continuous management, not a one-time cure.

Frequently Asked Questions โ“

Q1. How many toning sessions do I need?
A1. You should plan on continuing them for as long as you can afford to. It's continuous management, and you should plan for at least 10 sessions as a starting point.
Q2. I've had 20 sessions of toning but see no change. Why?
A2. Have you been applying sunscreen consistently? The recommended amount is one 50g tube of sunscreen per month. If self-care like sun protection and moisturizing isn't perfect, the laser's effect can be nullified.
Q3. If that's the case, isn't it better not to do toning at all?
A3. That's a possibility. If you feel no satisfaction, there's no need to spend the money, time, and effort. Just like diet is crucial for weight loss, "self-care" is extremely important for brightening.
Q4. Why is Gua Sha so bad for pigmentation?
A: Gua Sha creates intense, repeated friction on the skin. This physical irritation signals the skin to protect itself by producing more melanin, leading to or worsening pigmentation (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or melasma).
Q5. If I stop toning, will my skin go back to how it was?
A: Yes, it's very likely. Toning manages existing pigment and suppresses new production. If you stop the treatments *and* stop your diligent self-care (especially sunscreen), the pigment will return.

The nagging went on longer than I thought...
To be honest, everything I wrote above is exactly what I tell every single person who comes in for a toning consultation.

You could skip through this since you're reading it online, but if you come to my office, I'll explain it until your ears bleed. Haha.

That's all for today's laser topic. If you have any more questions, please feel free to contact Tatoa Clinic. Thank you for reading. ๐Ÿ˜Š

(P.S. If you disagree with any of the above... you're right!)
